The Role

McCann FitzGerald LLP is one of Ireland’s premier law firms, employing more than 600 people.

We provide the highest quality legal advice and representation to Irish and overseas clients.  Our clients are principally in the corporate, financial and business sectors and we also advise government entities and many State bodies, pension funds, educational and charitable institutions and trusts.

We are recruiting for an experienced knowledge lawyer to work principally with our Financial Services practice.  The successful candidate will work closely with other knowledge lawyers throughout the Firm and will report directly to the Head of the Firm’s Knowledge Team.  To the extent consistent with a principal focus on financial services law and regulation, the person appointed to this role may also work in other practice areas as the Firm may require.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:

  • collaboratively with colleagues, developing, maintaining and updating the Firm’s knowledge resources in the areas of financial services, finance and associated regulation,
  • monitoring developments in law, regulation and practice (in Ireland, in the wider EU and elsewhere as relevant) relating to financial services,
  • working closely with colleagues in the Firm in researching legal and regulatory queries that arise and providing, and assisting colleagues in providing, advice to clients on novel and complex legal and regulatory issues,
  • preparing and delivering current awareness, legal and regulatory presentations and training within the Firm and to clients,
  • preparing and delivering timely updates and briefings, and undertaking and facilitating training (including lectures, workshops and Law Society-accredited events) to trainees and other practitioners within the Financial Services practice and within the wider Firm, and to clients, on law and regulation and on relevant legal and regulatory developments,
  • supporting the development and management of the Firm’s knowledge resources,
  • preparing content for the Firm’s legal and regulatory current awareness service,
  • generating, and contributing to, materials and other content for external or public consumption that will enhance the Firm’s profile and reputation in the areas of financial services law and regulation, and
  • working, as required, on specific projects related to legal and regulatory resources, legal research, knowhow and legal education.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

The successful candidate will have:

  • a minimum of five years PQE in a legal, policy, academic or regulatory role, ideally (but not necessarily) in the areas of financial services law and regulation. Such experience might have been gained in, for example, an Irish or international law firm, in a State or EU agency, as a lecturer in a university, or similar,
  • a strong working knowledge of Irish and EU law and regulatory regimes and a keen awareness of, and interest in, proposed changes in these areas,
  • strong academic and practical interest in the areas of law and regulation with a commercial mindset for the practical application of legal and regulatory principles,
  • excellent research, drafting, presentation, communications (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills and a keen interest in developing the profile of knowledge services in the area of financial services,
  • the ability to exercise sound judgement and pragmatic decision-making,
  • a strategic mindset with an ability to manage projects and push them through to completion,
  • excellent organisational and prioritisation skills,
  • a high level of accuracy and attention to detail,
  • a strong interest in developing, maintaining and sharing relevant legal and regulatory knowledge,
  • a positive attitude and a collaborative approach to working,
  • excellent problem-solving abilities;
  • excellent time management skills, the ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and to meet deadlines on an on-going basis;
  • maximum discretion and the ability to work with sensitive and confidential information; and
  • a positive and proactive attitude, a willingness and ability to take ownership and responsibility for the completion of tasks and the ability to take and demonstrate initiative.

Education

The successful candidate will have:

  • a strong degree in law, or in law with another discipline, or in public policy, from a university in Ireland or the UK, and
  • extensive experience in a legal, policy or regulatory role, ideally in the areas of financial services law or regulation, gained as a solicitor or barrister in Ireland or in another common law jurisdiction, in industry, in a government department or a State agency, in an EU agency or on the academic staff of a university.
